HIGHLIGHTS: Watch the action from the second practice session at the Mexico City Grand Prix

George Russell topped the timesheets in the second practice session at the Mexico City Grand Prix – which was extended from 60 to 90 minutes for the second of Pirelli’s prototype 2023 tyre test.

Russell, Yuki Tsunoda, Esteban Ocon, Kevin Magnussen and Alex Albon all returned for FP2 after sitting out first practice so their teams could give junior drivers an opportunity, meaning they ran specialised programs in the early stages of the session.

On the soft compound tyre, Russell led the way with a time of 1m 19.970s to lead Tsunoda, in second, by 0.828s, with Ocon rounding out the top three. Lewis Hamilton was fourth fastest – the quickest driver on the unmarked Pirelli tyres – with home favourite Sergio Perez in fifth.

FP2: Russell heads second practice in Mexico City as Leclerc crashes out

We saw two red flags in the session, with Charles Leclerc crashing into the barrier at Turn 8 before Zhou Guanyu stopped on track with a mechanical issue at Turn 14 – the latter bringing a premature end to the day's action.
