Gasly loses Monaco podium as penalties reinstated following McLaren and Red Bull appeal

Two penalties given to Pierre Gasly during the Monaco Grand Prix have been reinstated following an appeal brought by McLaren and Red Bull, meaning that the Alpine driver has dropped from third to seventh in the race results.

Gasly crossed the line in P3 but had two separate five-second time penalties applied to his time after the race due to speeding in the pit lane. A Right of Review requested by Alpine subsequently saw his penalties rescinded by the stewards and his third place reinstated.

McLaren and Red Bull appealed the Right of Review decision to the FIA's International Court of Appeal, with a hearing held in Paris on August 25. The ICA subsequently ruled in favour of the appeal, meaning that Gasly’s penalties are reimposed.

A statement from the FIA reads: “The FIA is reviewing the methodology and operation of the current Formula 1 timing system and the related regulatory matters. It will also be reviewing other judicial procedures and operations including the right of review and the appeal processes.

“The FIA is fully supportive of the stewarding process and the independence and objectivity of the diverse panels of stewards who are an integral part of global motorsport.

“Stewards’ decisions are taken in a different environment to that of the Court, whereas the Court has access to extensive and additional legal counsel input, arguments and evidence.

“The FIA stewards constantly review their processes and take part in extensive professional development. Every decision of the ICA is carefully examined by FIA stewards ensuring a process of continuous improvement."

Isack Hadjar is now promoted to third in the Monaco Grand Prix results, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri promoted to fourth and the Racing Bulls of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad to fifth and sixth.
