Lando Norris achieved his long-awaited first victory in Formula 1 at the Miami Grand Prix, having sealed the lead by making a perfectly-timed pit stop during a Safety Car period halfway through the race.
It marked an impressive performance from Norris, who had started from P5. Pole-sitter Max Verstappen had enjoyed a strong getaway off the line, while Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz both initially overtook Charles Leclerc in the scrap for P2 before Perez locked up and narrowly avoided hitting team mate Verstappen, allowing Leclerc back through in the process.
Drama followed on Lap 29 when a Safety Car was called after a collision between Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant caused the Williams to hit the barriers, enabling Norris – who was leading, having not yet pitted – to make a pit stop and hold onto P1.
The McLaren driver managed to maintain a seven-second gap to second-placed Verstappen at the chequered flag, while Leclerc completed the podium in third ahead of Ferrari team mate Sainz in fourth.
Perez ended the day in P5, finishing just ahead of Lewis Hamilton in P6 during what proved to be an action-packed race.
