Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz whetted the appetite of his home crowd ahead of qualifying for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix, clocking the fastest time in an ultra-tight – and at times controversial – Free Practice 3 session.
Sainz stopped the clocks with a 1m 13.013s lap around the Barcelona track first used in F1 in 1991. But his rivals were nipping at his heels, with McLaren’s Lando Norris, team mate Charles Leclerc and the Red Bull of Max Verstappen all within a tenth of Sainz’s time in positions two to four.

Meanwhile, there were some hot-headed moments in the session too, as Lance Stroll appeared to nerf Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes at Turn 5 after feeling he’d been blocked by the six-time Barcelona winner – while Leclerc and Norris also appeared to make contact after Leclerc felt he’d been impeded.
