PADDOCK PASS: The drivers reflect on a thrilling maiden qualifying session at Mugello
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton enjoyed the distinction of being the first ever F1 driver to take a pole position around Mugello, as he claimed his 95th career pole at the Tuscan Grand Prix.
But for a spin for Renault’s Esteban Ocon, it could well have been Hamilton’s team mate Valtteri Bottas on pole, with the yellow flags brought out after Ocon rotated at the exit of Turn 3 preventing Bottas from improving on his final run in Q3. That spin was good news for Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, however, whose excellent P5 was protected by those yellow flags, giving Ferrari a timely boost ahead of their 1,000th Grand Prix.
