It was an exhilarating start to Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix as George Russell remarkably bolted from fourth on the grid into the lead by the first corner – charging his way past a host of rival drivers.
Making a stunning getaway, Russell cleared Mercedes team mate Lewis Hamilton, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and then the pole-sitting McLaren of Lando Norris with a sweeping move around the outside of Turn 1.

Verstappen also got the jump on Norris to run second, while Hamilton held fourth over the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, as the cars behind squabbled for position but kept it clean.
Russell’s lead proved to be short-lived, though, with Verstappen passing him at the start of the third lap to take over at the front of the field and begin to edge away from the competition.
