Sauber declare ‘important milestone’ as Audi acquire minority stake ahead of F1 entry

Sauber have announced that Audi recently acquired a minority stake in the company, as preparations continue for the German manufacturer’s planned Formula 1 entry in 2026.

Audi initially confirmed at last year’s Belgian Grand Prix that they will join F1 when the new engine regulations – featuring increased electrical power and advanced sustainable fuels – are introduced in three years' time.

Later in the year, Audi set out plans for a tie-up with Sauber that will see the Swiss operation – currently competing as Alfa Romeo and using Ferrari power units – become their works team.

On Monday, a statement issued by the Sauber Group said they were “pleased to announce that, as per the plans outlined in October last year, Audi acquired a minority stake in the Sauber Group in January 2023.

“This is an important milestone on the way to Audi’s entry in Formula 1, scheduled for 2026, for which the Sauber Group will be the German brand’s strategic partner.”

Sauber will continue to compete with Alfa Romeo branding in 2023, prior to their collaboration ending, as drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu look to build on last year's P6 finish in the constructors’ standings.
