In balmy conditions at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, the Sao Paulo Sprint got under way, with Lando Norris failing to convert his P1 starting position into the Sprint lead by the end of the first lap as Max Verstappen nipped ahead from P2 on the grid.
The other big gainer on Lap 1 was George Russell, who passed both Sergio Perez and Norris to hold P2 behind Verstappen at the scene of his maiden Grand Prix victory 12 months ago.
