WATCH: Raikkonen becomes first driver to hit the barriers in 2021 after spinning Alfa Romeo
On Friday evening in Bahrain, Kimi Raikkonen earned the dubious honour of being the first driver to hit the barriers this season. The Finn, world champion in 2007, lost control of his Alfa Romeo coming out of Turn 2, early on in FP2. The Ferrari-powered machine then spun across the gravel before tagging the tyre wall. Despite suffering fairly significant front end damage, Raikkonen was able to limp back to the pits...
“I lost the rear, hit the wall and that’s about it,” was Raikkonen’s no-nonsense assessment. "It’s not really [a setback]. We were here a week ago testing and did a lot of laps. So it’s not ideal but it doesn’t change much.”
