The 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix was one of the most chaotic races in recent memory, with Esteban Ocon sealing his maiden victory in Formula 1 in spectacular fashion. And with the 2022 edition set to get under way this weekend, what better time than now to look back on last year’s incredible race.
Lewis Hamilton started brilliantly from pole, but the same could not be said for his team mate Valtteri Bottas, who fell back to fifth from second after a slow getaway. To make matters worse, the Finn then hit the back of Lando Norris heading into Turn 1, bumping him into Max Verstappen, before Bottas himself took out Sergio Perez, forcing both drivers to retire.
The race was then red-flagged, with the restart producing one of the most bizarre sights in Formula 1 history, Hamilton lining up alone on the grid as the lights went out as the remaining runners ducked into the pit lane for slick tyres. And when Hamilton himself then boxed, Ocon took a lead which he would hold onto for the rest of the race.
Ocon was challenged by Sebastian Vettel for most of the race, and while the Aston Martin driver took the chequered flag in second place, he was later disqualified with a fuel issue. Hamilton was promoted to second, meaning Carlos Sainz finished in third.
