Pat Symonds is a legend of F1 with nearly 50 years of experience in the sport, meaning plenty of stories to share. Fortunately for our fans, he recently sat down to tell them in the latest instalment of the Beyond The Grid podcast…
During a wide-ranging conversation, Pat regales host Tom Clarkson about his past successes, which began by helping Ayrton Senna settle into life as an F1 driver with the plucky Toleman team back in 1984 – including race engineering the Brazilian to that stunning podium in Monaco.

Over the years, Pat worked with other legendary names such as Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso, scoring a host of race wins and world championship titles with them at Benetton and Renault across the 1990s and 2000s.
Nowadays, the respected British engineer is F1’s Chief Technical Officer, with his task being to produce spectacular racing today and for the years to come, which includes the introduction of sustainable fuels that will power a new breed of F1 car from 2026.
