Bortoleto handed penalty after yellow flag infringement in Azerbaijan GP

Gabriel Bortoleto has been handed a time penalty after the Audi driver was judged to have overtaken under a yellow flag.

The Brazilian finished P13 during Saturday's 51-lap race around the streets of Baku on a weekend where Audi struggled to challenge for the points, as team mate Nico Hulkenberg finished in P11.

Post-race, the stewards summoned Bortoleto for an incident which took place between Turns 6 and 7 during the first lap after the first Safety Car restart.

The stewards noted that "marshal posts in this area were displaying physical “SC” boards together with waved Yellow Flags", following a crash between Alpine team mates Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, as well as Lando Norris' McLaren, at Turn 1.

The document noted that although Bortoleto initially reacted to the yellow flags, "he did not see any corresponding electronic indication and did not receive a Safety Car indication on his steering wheel", and that "he was also informed by his Team that the Safety Car had not been deployed".

As a result, Bortoleto proceeded to overtake Sergio Perez's Cadillac prior to the appearance of the Safety Car, with stewards determining that "as the Safety Car had not been deployed, Bortoleto cannot be considered to have overtaken another car under Safety Car conditions".

They did however find that Bortoleto still made an overtake while a yellow flag was present, handing him a 10-second penalty which dropped him down to P15 and last of the classified runners.

The document continued: "A waved Yellow Flag is an instruction in its own right and must be respected irrespective of any accompanying signal.

"A driver cannot disregard a Yellow Flag based on his own assessment as to why it has been displayed or whether it should have been displayed."
