FP1: Russell leads Antonelli and Leclerc as cars hit Madring for first time

George Russell finished fastest in Free Practice 1 ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, heading Mercedes team mate Kimi Antonelli as drivers sampled the Madring for the first time.

The Briton posted a 1m 34.077s, which left him nearly three tenths clear of Antonelli, as Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished best of the rest on Formula 1's return to Madrid.

As the light at the end of the pit lane turned green at 1330 local time, a flurry of cars headed out onto the 22-turn circuit for the first time in a bid to gather as much information as possible across the opening one-hour session.

Sergio Perez was the first driver to encounter a problem, the Cadillac man requiring a new steering wheel, while both Alpines of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto remained in the garage for the first 15 minutes.

Esteban Ocon reported that "the grip is high", with lap times continually tumbling as drivers utilised the medium Pirelli tyre in the early running and attempted to avoid traffic that was rife around the 5.414km street circuit throughout.

Drivers soon began to exceed the limits, with Antonelli running wide at Turn 13, while both Audi drivers Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg cut the Turn 5 chicane.

By the halfway point, Hamilton headed the leaderboard with a 1m 34.620s, leaving him fractionally quicker than Leclerc, with Antonelli two tenths further back but having used the soft tyre.

Russell aborted his first lap with the red-walled tyre after encountering traffic, with Liam Lawson using the same compound to jump up to fourth inside the final 30 minutes with his Red Bull.

Russell was soon back up to speed, slotting into third behind the Ferrari drivers and ahead of Antonelli as the track continued to evolve and tyre management started to become an issue, Max Verstappen having grained his medium tyres.

There were problems for Yuki Tsunoda as his Racing Bulls machine was wheeled into the garage with 20 minutes remaining, the Japanese driver suffering an issue with his power steering that ended his session.

By this stage most drivers were focused on single lap pace, Russell posting a 1m 34.145s before fractionally improving down to a 1m 34.077s which remained fastest at the chequered flag.

In contrast, Leclerc was struggling to improve with the soft tyre, heading into the run-off zone at Turn 17, as Antonelli jumped up to second and less than three tenths behind Russell approaching the final 10 minutes.

Leclerc finished nearly five tenths behind Russell, as Hamilton on the medium tyre, Verstappen's Red Bull, Lando Norris (McLaren), Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls), Oscar Piastri's McLaren, Hulkenberg and Lawson completed the top 10.

Bortoleto was P11 from Ocon's Haas, Colapinto, Gasly, home hero Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Ollie Bearman's Haas.

Spanish local Carlos Sainz was P17 in his Williams, followed by Tsunoda, Lance Stroll's Aston Martin, Alex Albon (Williams) and the two Cadillacs of Perez and Valtteri Bottas.
