Raikkonen gets fresh engine for race

Kimi Raikkonen has been given a new power unit on his Ferrari - his second change of the weekend - ahead of Sunday afternoon’s Formula 1 Gran Premio de Mexico 2015.

It means Raikkonen, who qualified 13th, gets a 30-place grid penalty in addition to his previous five-place drop for a gearbox change. The Finn is now set to start 19th, between the McLarens of Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button.

Raikkonen missed much of FP3 after problems on his SF15-T prompted the team to swap his gearbox, as well as switching his engine to a previously-used unit so that he could take part in qualifying.

Following that session, in light of his already lowly grid position, Ferrari opted to install a new power unit for the race, incurring a ten-place penalty for the internal combustion engine change and a further 20 places for new ancillary components.

Raikkonen remains ahead of Button on the provisional grid thanks to the latter’s greater number of penalties, currently expected to total 70 grid places.
